Book Review: Alice: The Wanderland Chronicles by J.M Sullivan

BOOK REVIEW(1)

Hey everyone,

Today I have a review for you for the book Alice: The Wanderland Chronicles by J.M Sullivan. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this which is released today 16th May.

What Is Alice About?

Alice is a horror retelling of the famous Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. We follow the story of Alice who is trying to find an antidote for the deadly Momorath virus her sister, Dinah, has contracted. Set in a time where the Momorath (Un-dead) roam the lands making Alice’s journey perilous. Alice encounters many people on her journey some which hinder and some which help.

What Did I Think of Alice?

I have read a few different retellings of Alice and each has been written really well. However, I have to say this version is excellent. It is so different from any other retelling that I have read. It is ingenious, intriguing, thought provoking and entertaining.

Alice is a likeable character, she is a simple girl who loves to read and keep herself at peace. As Alice finds herself thrust into the Wanderland she finds parts of herself that she didn’t know existed. Her focus…to save her sister, the only person in the world she has.

On her journey she meets the charismatic Chess and techno geek Bug. Chess helps guide her through the city but never seems to be around when Alice needs him.

Chess is quite a cool guy, despite his disappearing act he is easy to like. He is cheeky and seems to try and make the best of a situation.

As the story continues we also meet Nate, Ace, The Red Queen and the Jokers.

At times the story is quite brutal but it is so well done, the scenes easily unfold in your head.

The Red Queen is as dislikable as you would imagine. It appears she not only is protecting her people but up to something else, something that will benefit her.

I really liked the way that the original elements of Alice were put into this novel. Matt Hatter for example as the mad hatter, a crazy Doctor, the roses for Aunt Rose, especially the ‘Off With Their Head’s’ scenes. Everything was very well thought out.

Sullivan’s writing style flows easily, making this book not only enjoyable but immersable. I would definitely be in the queue waiting for the sequel.

I would give this book a 5 out of 5 rating. What is better than a twisted retelling with blood, gore and a whole bunch of crazy?
